BEHAVIORAL FINANCE: HOW TO SUCCEED DESPITE YOURSELF

Greg Houser, CFA (moderator) – FEG, Vice President
Russell Fuller, CFA, PhD (panelist) – Fuller & Thaler Asset Management Inc., Chief Investment Officer

Ben Graham stated that “The investor’s chief problem – even his worst enemy – is likely to be himself.” Our collective decisions created the successes of our civilization but also our history of recurring financial crises, most recently the 2008 crisis from which we are still trying to recover. On a smaller scale, where we have more individual control, our decision processes drastically impact, to the positive and the negative, our portfolios’ ability to survive a crisis and help us reach our investment goals. We discuss our common behavior biases that affect investment decisions, and how developing an understanding of our decision making processes can help us begin to counteract those biases.

This session is appropriate for both institutional investors and financial advisors.

RISK-BASED APPROACH TO PORTFOLIO CONSTRUCTION

Nolan Bean, CFA, CAIA – FEG, Managing Principal / Portfolio Construction and Investment Philosophy
Christopher Meyer, CFA – FEG, Managing Principal / Chief Investment Officer

In the midst of a low-expected-return environment, we discuss how institutions can increase the probability of meeting their long-term investment objectives by implementing a risk-based approach to portfolio construction.  The key learning objectives are how to:

  • Improve the governance process and avoid common investor pitfalls
  • Structure a portfolio that balances short-term market risk with long-term shortfall risk, including the inherent limitations, with four common risk reduction strategies
  • Classify investments based on the primary sources of risk and how to measure and monitor risk at the portfolio level
This session is appropriate for both institutional investors and financial advisors.
